hong kong

my introduction to photography began with the act of photographing the city of hong kong, my second home. the camera gave me the ability to separate myself from my surroundings, to simultaneously document and observe.

through this process, the streets that i have walked on for most of my life have become new to me. the streets are a theater, one in which i watch in an indiscriminate way. i have the same interest in a street musician as i have with a hong kong businessman. a small shrine in the honor of a family's ancestors is a subtle detail that i look at in the same way as a sixty-foot buddha.

photography has opened doors for me to venture into, physically in space and also emotionally within myself. i am interested in weaving a narrative between the idiosyncrasies and tensions of a hong kong life.

hong kong is a place that teeters between modernity and tradition, east and west. my life parallels this work in that i have these same tensions within myself. although i have spent a significant part of my life here (hong kong), my newfound awareness, reflected in these images, is a beginning to helping me define who i am.
